Do you know someone who is struggling with substance use? Has a friend or loved one ever expressed concern over your alcohol, medication, or recreational drug use?

Breaking Free is a no cost, evidence-based well-being and recovery program for those looking to access support on their own time and schedule.

It is an app that is designed to provide you with support in recovery that suits your lifestyle. The information that a user puts into the program determines what that users' goals will be. It provides the user with information to make the best decision possible regarding recovery. It will show you how your thoughts or cravings turn into actions over time. People are often embarrassed about their substance use and struggle to be honest with providers about their actual usage. By inputting this information into the app yourself, you can begin to track your own patterns. Then, you will be able to identify your own high-risk situations and triggers and learn what to do when you face them.

“Breaking Free uses practical, self-guided courses, positive coping skills and behaviour change techniques to support individuals with early intervention, prevention, or rehabilitation, and engages people to better manage addiction, decreasing the chances of relapse” (ontariohealth.ca).

Breaking Free uses a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based program to support users in achieving their goals. CBT helps service users reframe their thoughts, feelings, and resulting actions to better reflect the life that they want to live. By using this model, Breaking Free users are 50% more likely to exit treatment successfully (BreakingFree Group, 2022). They are also 60% less likely to re-enter services within a year.

BreakingFree was created by an organization that supports people dealing with substance use and addiction issues. It is an innovative program designed to give individuals agency over their own recovery. Services can be accessed through the website or an app on your phone and can be used on the go. The aim of the program is to identify an individual’s triggers and high-risk situations in order to effectively battle your cravings.
